R & D Park is mostly a manufacturing and industrial area with several large companies making this area their home base of operations. Along the southern boundary of the neighborhood, there are several multi-family units. These sit just in front of a big single-family home neighborhood where you might feel a little safer taking your dog out for a walk because there is less traffic and there is plenty of room to stretch your legs. You will need to be careful as there aren't any sidewalks, but traffic in this neighborhood is typically light.
You can take your pup out practically any day of the year with winter daytime highs in the 60s and 70s and summer highs in the 80s. Not only is there a dog park within walking distance, but the Everglades Wildlife Management Area is just down the road with miles of trails for the two of you to explore and enjoy!
What is the terrain like in R aD Park?
Much like the rest of the Tampa area, the ground here is pretty flat. There is a waterway that runs north to south through the center of the area and, of course, the Everglades Wildlife Management Area to the west if you want more challenging terrain to hike along. This is a great area to hike as there are miles of levees and trails to explore. If you prefer to relax on the bench while your pup runs around with a bunch of their canine friends, Dr. Paul's Dog Park is just to the south along with Westchester Park nearby. Between running around in the various parks in the area and hiking the Everglade WMA, both of you can find new ways to change up your walks on a regular basis. One thing to keep in mind is that you never know when a thunderstorm might pop up so be sure you have an umbrella with you!
How many greenways are there in R aD Park?
Although the vast majority of R&D Park is given over to an industrial park, those who live in the apartment complexes in the southern part of the community have access to an incredible array of parks and recreation areas.
At the southern end of Westchester Lake Park is an off-leash dog park where you can let your pooch run around to their heart's content. You can also take the trail running around the lake and simply enjoy this lovely little park!
Another option is to wander through the community to the south and take your pup over to Three Friends Park which is essentially one large grassy area surrounded by water with a few trees for shade.
The ultimate green space is the miles of trails for the two of you to explore that wander all throughout the Everglades Wildlife Management Area. It could take the two of you months or even years to follow all of the levees and trails!
