Oakwood Park Dolan is a small community near the Turie T. Small Elementary School. The homes here are mostly older single-family dwellings with lots of trees amid suburban-sized yards. There are a few smaller restaurants in the area, but if you want something a little more, you have no choice but to look outside of the neighborhood.
The good news is that Daytona Beach has a number of excellent restaurants both here on the mainland side and over on the beachside. You can find everything from fast food all the way to the latest in haute cuisine in a fine dining setting. There are a few small parks in the area and of course the beach for you and Howie to play on.
If you are like most who live here, you and your pup are going to love going out on the beach whether it’s during the hot summer months or the comfortably warm winter months.
The ground here is pretty flat and residential which you might think would make going for a walk boring and less challenging. But it only has to be this way if you let it!
When faced with level terrain, you have to put your thinking cap on. With so many blocks of housing to walk around, you simply have to go around different blocks on a regular basis. There is a lot of fun in finding new ways to make use of the same old terrain. To build up stamina, you can go for distance rather than just a brief walk around the block.
Keep in mind that you have to walk back just as far as you have gone on the outward leg. Give yourself and Fido time to get used to the walks each time before pushing any further. This will give both of you time to get used to the extra distance!
If you are ambitious, you and Fido can walk over to the Samuel L. Butts Archeological Park where the skeletal remains of a Mastodon were discovered along with hundreds of Timucua Indian artifacts from 1,500 years ago.
There is also Tuscawilla Park where there are plenty of shade trees for the two of you to wander among, a 65-pin disc golf course, and Daytona Beach Zipline Adventures. But these are only small parks. If you want somewhere with a little more space, you need to head to the beach.
The World's Most Famous
Beach runs for 23 miles and offers both soft sand to struggle in and wet, hard sand that is easier to walk on. The best time of day to hit the beaches
with your dog is early in the morning before it gets too hot outside and the beaches
get too crowded for the two of you to walk unhindered.
