Ocean Grove sits midway between the Halifax River and the Atlantic Ocean, offering several single-family homes and a small shopping center with a grocery store and a post office. The streets and houses are spread out, giving you room to take nice, long walks.
While there is a Metz Lounge in the shopping center, if you want places to eat out, you will have to get in the car and drive. The same applies to finding dog-friendly parks and pet supply stores. But it's a small price to pay for living within walking distance of the amazing white sands of the World's Most Famous Beach.
If you love the beach, then you are going to love the 90-degree summers here when there is hardly a cloud in the sky for weeks at a time. The most you have to worry about during the summer is the occasional thunderstorm.
The terrain here is an interesting blend of suburbia and the beach. This gives you the distinct advantage of having three different types of terrain to choose from for your walks.
The first is the wide range of paved sidewalks and streets that can take you all over the peninsula based on how far you and Fido want to go walking. Be sure to keep an eye on the condition of their paws as the pavement tends to act like sandpaper and can damage them.
Then there is the soft sand of the beach. This terrain sucks at your feet with every step you take and makes for an excellent workout for both you and your pup's leg muscles. Finally, there is the firm, wet sand that offers a relatively easy surface the two of you can use to cool down on the way back to your starting point.
The only real green space within walking distance is, of course, the beach. It's a great place for the two of you to go hiking along. Do keep in mind that during the summer months, the dry, white sand can be almost as hot as the paved surfaces. You should plan to take your beach walks early in the morning while everything is still nice and cool. At the same time, going for your walks early in the morning should help keep the number of people out on the beach to a minimum.
Along with making sure you keep Fido on a leash during your time on the beach, you also need to make sure that you take bags with you to clean up any mess they leave behind. No one wants to be walking or playing in the sand only to end up sticking a foot or hand in a pile of doggy doo!
