Wag! Walkers know Selden
Selden is truly a tiny pocket community by the Samuel L. Butts Archeological Park. It's a single-family home area near the Daytona Beach Golf Club and the Turie T. Small Elementary School.
While this is a great place to live if you like to eat out, you will have to drive a bit to find the nearest restaurant that isn't fast food. But, this being said, there are plenty of great restaurants in Daytona Beach, both on the beachside and the mainland. No matter what you like, you can find it. If you think the food in town is good, you should try the nightclubs in the area as well. Many have a deck that reaches out to the beach most of the year with dancing and an outdoor bar.
With summer night temperatures in the 70s, you can't go wrong, especially when the daytime temperatures are in the 90s.
What is the terrain like in Selden?
The terrain here is exactly what you might expect to see in suburbia. You'll find block after block of residential neighborhoods with the addition of the area being exceptionally flat. There is not much to challenge your pup here, but if you are just getting started, that's not such a bad thing.
Young dogs who are just getting started need to time for the pads under their paws to toughen up enough to handle longer walks on the cement. They will also need time for leg muscles and lungs to fully develop to the point where they can also handle the longer walks. Once they are ready, the two of you can take off exploring the many blocks and wandering around the lake in the Samuel L. Butts Archeological Park for a change of pace.
Just remember to take your walks during the early morning hours before things start heating up.
How many greenways are there in Selden?
The nearest and virtually only usable green space is the Samuel L. Butts Archeological Park, named for an amateur archeologist who discovered parts of a wooly mammoth along with countless arrowheads and other items from when a Timucua Indian Tribe lived here some 1,500 years ago. Today, the site has been filled with water and forms an aquatic life sanctuary for many migratory fowl.
Not too far away is Tuscawilla Park with acres of woods and trails for you to wander around in, along with a 65-pin disc golf course and the Daytona Beach Zipline Adventures.
For those who crave something a little bigger, there are over 30,000 acres of the Tomoka Wildlife Management Area out to the west with miles of trails running all through the forests for you to enjoy hiking on all year round. Just don't feed the gators and bring your bug spray with you! You will need it.
