Wag! Walkers know Highland Lakes
Highland Lakes is a mobile home community out on SR-44, south of Lake Mack-Forest Hills. One of the many reasons people choose to buy property in this area is the large lots of land available. Another one is the peace and quiet that comes with living this far out of town. While much of the surrounding areas are heavily wooded, many of the trees were cut down to make room for people to build, which can be a bit of a shame.
Shopping is an entirely different problem. To the south, there is a Superette in Pine Lakes for emergency needs. However, if you need to grab a whole heap of things, then you'll have to drive into the central shopping area of Deland. It's not more than fifteen minutes north on SR-44 and it's where you will find several big-box retailers, numerous local and chain stores, and plenty of tasty restaurants for your entire family to try.
What is the terrain like in Highland Lakes?
Unlike some of the more distant communities, there are paved roads in this area, but none of them have sidewalks for you and your dog to walk on. Like most residential communities, there are morning and evening rush hours to deal with. While traffic in the neighborhood isn't as bad as it might be in town, you'll still need to keep this in mind when planning your daily walks with your dog.
Also like most residential neighborhoods, during the school year, there are numerous big yellow school buses running through twice a day. The rest of the day, the roads tend to stay relatively quiet. Thankfully, the grass berms along the roadways can be used to help keep you from being stuck walking on the roads. Your dog is sure to appreciate the softer, cooler surface to walk on and there is less risk of your dog ending up with badly burned paw pads.
How many greenways are there in Highland Lakes?
Living in Highland Lakes, you are surrounded by undeveloped forest lands. Here, you and your dog should be able to find enough trails to keep the two of you walking on new ground for days.
To the south on SR-44 is Seminole State Forest. This is a great place to bring the whole family for a day hike around the lake or camping for the weekend. The lake has a small fishing dock for everyone to use and there are several trails for you and your dog to go hiking on. You can go birding or wildlife viewing here as there are many different species of animals and birds to see!
One of the more unique features of this state forest is that it is home to no less than 18 different natural communities, each with its own individual diverse range of flora and fauna. Along with miles of hiking trails, there are horseback trails and designated cycle trails as well.
