Wag! Walkers know Hawks Park
The Hawks Park neighborhood straddles US-1 between
the FEC railroad tracks and the Indian River. The homes here are
older but well-maintained single-family units sitting on large shady lots. While
the half on the east side of US-1 has direct access to the river, those in the
western half have a cemetery and the Edgewater Public School. There is a public
park on the river with a public kayak launch.
Not only is US-1 the main highway running from north to
south through town, but it's also home to the bulk of the shopping amenities and
restaurants in town. This includes the Winn-Dixie and Publix supermarkets where you
can pick up food for everyone in the family, including your four-legged friend. Edgewater also sports no less than three pet supply stores
and a public dog park where you and your pooch are welcome to come and play off-leash with others in the neighborhood.
What is the terrain like in Hawks Park?
The terrain on both sides of the
highway can best be described as "old school" suburbia. The houses
are modest, but sit on large yards that are well-spaced out. While both sides are home to
working families with children, traffic can be a little hectic during the rush hours. Thankfully, someone saw fit to put a sidewalk along the south side of Ocean Avenue.
On the other hand, US-1 tends to
be a bustling highway from very early in the morning until very late at night.
Despite most of the heavy traffic using I-95 since its completion, this highway
continues to endure a significant amount of traffic. However, there are sidewalks for
you and your pup to make use of on both sides of the highway. You can use them
to walk to the Frosty King in ten minutes or less! You can even walk to the Indian River Animal Clinic
in five minutes.
How many greenways are there in Hawks Park?
Sometimes green spaces are in the eye
of the beholder and, for those on the west side of the neighborhood, this particular brand of green space has to
be the Edgewater-New Smyrna Cemetery. There are plenty of walkways running
throughout, but it's up to you if you take your dog for walks here. If you
choose to do so, be sure you keep your pup on a leash at all times and clean up
any messes they left behind.
Those on the east side have access
to the riverbank which is wide enough
for the two of you to enjoy taking long walks. If you follow it to the north,
you'll end up at the Menard-May Park where there is a lot more grass to play on
and a public kayak launch into the Indian River. Of course, just
because you live on the west side of the highway doesn't mean you can't cross over to the east
side and enjoy the same green space!
