Although there aren't any homes in the Hawks Park Cemetery, there are plenty of residences nearby and the Edgewater Public School sits immediately to the west. The cemetery covers a vast area spanning several blocks along US-1. Housing runs the gamut from single-family to apartments in the nearby residential community. Beyond the sidewalks along US-1 and the paths running through the cemetery, there are many for you and your dog to walk around.
Shopping in Edgewater is a little on the short side with a Winn-Dixie supermarket on the corner of West Indian River Boulevard and a Publix a little further south. Along with this, there are several small stores and a selection of local and chain restaurants for you and your family to eat at. The one thing that is a bit of a drive is a pet supply store. The nearest is a Pet Supermarket on SR-44 and Mission Drive, along with a Critter's Corner Pet Shop.
Like most small towns, you won't find much in the way of sidewalks for you and your pooch to walk on, leaving you with no choice but to stick to the roads. Traffic here is much like any other small burg along the East Coast of Florida. US-1 stays pretty hectic during the day with peak traffic during the morning and evening rush hours.
You might be surprised at the number of people who take their dogs walking on the trails running through the cemetery. There are plenty to choose from, just be sure you keep your dog on a short leash and carry bags in case they decide to leave a mess behind. Although it might be tempting, you should never take your dog for walks along the nearby railroad track. Not only is this illegal, it's also not safe as railroad traffic can become a hazard to you or your passing pup.
While the cemetery is a vast area of grass, if you plan to use it for your walks, you and your dog should stick to the paths rather than walking among the graves. On the northern end of the cemetery is a large area of grass with no obstacles the two of you can use.
To the south of the cemetery is the Southeast Volusia Family YMCA where there is plenty of grass, walking trails, and a couple of lakes. You and your pup should have no problem getting in your exercise on these fields as long as there aren't any games going on.
The nearest dog park is to the north on Paige Avenue in New Smyrna Beach. Open to the public, this park offers two separate areas for large and small dogs, water for thirsty pups, and a pool. It's a great place to take your pooch for a little play time while you relax in the shade.
