Wag! Walkers know Sunset Park
Sunset Park is a neighborhood in Fort Myers, Florida. Fort Myers is located just across the Caloosahatchee River from Cape Coral which is a town on the western coast of the state of Florida. Sunset Park is just a few blocks south of the center of town in Fort Myers and it is a pleasant, secluded neighborhood where one-story homes line the small side streets that branch off of Sunset Road and Harrison Street.
Florida is well known for staying fairly consistently warm most of the year. Its summers are hot and humid, so you will want to make sure you and your dog stay properly hydrated when you go for walks in the warm season. Since Sunset Park is towards the southwestern part of the state, its winter days hardly ever dip below 50 degrees and highs can still even be in the 60s and 70s. Check the forecast before venturing out.
What is the terrain like in Sunset Park?
The terrain in most of Florida is famously flat. In Sunset Park, this remains true. You will not find any hills or dramatic changes in elevation while on a walk and the terrain is mostly very mild. Most of the trees and green spaces in the area feature Florida’s famous Spanish Moss which hangs from tall trees and creates extra shade for the hotter days.
Sunset Park is a very quiet neighborhood and the surrounding Fort Myers area is hardly any busier. The neighborhood is entirely residential and its borders are defined by Linhart Avenue to the north, Braman Avenue to the south, Cortez Boulevard to the west, and Cleveland Avenue to the east. Cleveland is the only major thoroughfare, so the foot and street traffic will pick up there during regular rush hour times but the rest of the neighborhood will remain quiet and pleasant for walking at almost any time of day.
How many greenways are there in Sunset Park?
Coronado Park is the only park or greenway within the neighborhood but it offers a great spot for locals to enjoy on a nice day. The park has lots of open green space, paved walkways, two shelters, and a playground, making it an ideal destination to walk to with your dog. There are no other parks within the borders of the neighborhood but there are many other walking options that can be found just outside Sunset Park.
Just a few blocks north of the northern border, you will find Manuel’s Branch Neighborhood Park which is much larger than Coronado Park. It features several acres of walking area with woods, open green space, walking trails, and a playground and is frequented by locals in the Manuel’s Branch neighborhood which is adjacent to Sunset Park. There are several satellite parks to the east and north of Manuel's Branch Park which will also prove to be great areas to explore.
