Wag! Walkers know Downtown North Miami (NoMi)
North Miami, also known as NoMi, is located approximately 10 miles from Miami and is the home of the Biscayne Bay Campus of the Florida International University and the North Campus of Johnson & Wales University. NoMi is also home to the Miami Auto Museum and the Museum of Contemporary Art.
Downtown is a blend of businesses along NE 125th and residential areas one block north or south of NE 125th. This area has undergone a recent revitalization and sports a number of trendy shops, galleries, and restaurants. From the eclectic to the eccentric, you can find it here. Once you get off the main drag into the residential areas, there are plenty of sidewalks and grass berms to walk on along with lots of shade trees to help keep you cooled down. Like the rest of Miami, the climate here ranges from warm and wonderful in the winter to hot and muggy in the summer.
What is the terrain like in Downtown North Miami (NoMi)?
The terrain you are likely to encounter depends on where you are walking. For example, if you are walking along NE 125th, the only thing you are likely to face is pavement. Fortunately, there are plenty of grassy spots along the way to help with your walks and give Spot somewhere to go potty. The ground through this part of NoMi is quite flat, but at least once you get off the main street, you can walk from block to block and use the grass berms to help protect your pup's paws from damage due to the concrete surface or the temperature of the pavement.
While you may not find any hills to challenge you, distance can also be a good way to build up your stamina. All you have to do is add more blocks into each of your walks as it will be good for both of you.
How many greenways are there in Downtown North Miami (NoMi)?
NoMi is not fitted with much in the way of greenways with the exception of lawns in front of some buildings and a tiny spot in front of the Museum of Contemporary Art. The good news is that as long as you and Spot don't mind going for a bit of a drive, there are several parks within driving distance.
To the north, there is the Enchanted Forest and Elaine Gordon Park. This park covers 22 acres astride Arch Creek. There are paved trails, natural hammocks, and incredible scenic views for you to enjoy.
To the south is the Biscayne Shores and Gardens Park. This is a great place to let your pup run around off-leash. The only thing about this park is that you do have to purchase a Miami Dog Park Pass for which you have to pay a fee and prove your dog is up to date on all of their shots.
