Wag! Walkers know Highland Lakes
Highland Lakes is a peaceful community of larger homes located in North Miami and is a beautiful place to raise a family. The wide sidewalks with grass berms make the entire community very dog-friendly. The neighbors here are friendly, welcoming, and keep the community clean and well-kept. Sadly, you will need to drive a fair distance to find dog-friendly parks and pet supply stores. On the other hand, there are many extraordinary restaurants for you to sample located around the perimeter of the community. The neighborhood is wrapped around its namesake, the Highland Lakes, that wrap around the northwest corner of town.
The area has one more thing going for it: the climate. The weather here is a balmy 60 degrees in January and a comfortable mid-80s in the spring. Although it never snows here, you do get a fair amount of rain. Most of the storms are short, so you should be able to plan your walks around them.
What is the terrain like in Highland Lakes?
Like most of Miami, Highland Lakes is a relatively flat community with little to show for itself beyond the lakes and the Highland Oaks Park just to the east of the neighborhood. Walking here during the summer months is best left to the early morning hours. The problem is that once the ambient temperature reaches the mid-80s, the sidewalks can reach 135-145°F. At these temperatures, the pads on Jack's paws can be severely burned within minutes. By walking in the early morning hours, the sidewalks will have had time to cool down. If you wait until much later, the pavement will have reached the point at which it can harm Jack's paws.
One saving grace is that there are grassy berms for Jack to walk on to help them avoid searing their feet. The good news is that there are numerous blocks for the two of you to explore by going different ways every day!
How many greenways are there in Highland Lakes?
Although the houses in the Highland Lakes have large yards, they are tightly packed together, leaving little extra room for you and Jack to run around on. Thankfully, the neighborhood is bordered on one side by Highland Oaks Park and on the other side is Ives Estates Park. Highland Oaks Park offers a fishing dock, lots of grassy areas to play on, and a trail that wanders through the entire park and around the lake. This is a lovely place for you and Jack to hike around on a sunny day!
On the other hand, Ives Estates Park is home to the Miami Rugby Team and is a quiet, safe place for you, your family, and your favorite four-legged furry friend. Play on the vast areas of grass, walk along the trails, or maybe even take in a rugby game. Between these two parks, you and Jack should have plenty of room to play together.
