Islands, or as they are better known, the Venetian Islands, are a series of man-made isles between the
mainland and beachside of Miami. The Islands are also home to some of the most
expensive homes in the city. Despite this fact, each of the islands is densely populated
but has little, if anything, in the way of amenities. Being on the Venetian Causeway
puts things like grocery stores, pet supply stores, and dog-friendly parks close
at hand.
Fortunately, you can go for walks with your dog around the
area, no matter where you happen to live.
There are five islands in all, including San Marco, Rivo Alto, Di Lido, Belle,
and San Marino. Each of the islands differs in size, but the distance between each
of them is short, making it quite possible
for you and your dog to walk between each of them. This actually is a great way to get in plenty of fresh air and exercise.
What is the terrain like in Islands?
As you should expect with a
man-made island, the land on each of them is quite flat and, since they are small in size, you and your
pup should plan to walk on more than one of them to reach your exercise goals. Do
keep in mind that since the Venetian Causeway runs to the beachside, it tends
to be busy during the day.
Keeping your walks to early in the morning or later in the
evening will help you avoid trying to walk between the islands with too much traffic to deal with. While you are out enjoying your walks together, you get the chance
to watch the boat traffic out on Biscayne Bay. If you live on or walk to Belle Isle, you and your pup can spend time in the park.
All of the streets offer sidewalks
and at least some amount of shade. Be sure you take your walks during the early morning before the
world starts heating up.
How many greenways are there in Islands?
There are two parks for you and your dog to enjoy, one at
each end of the island chain. On Biscayne Island is the Venetian Causeway Park,
a long grass park with walking trails and
shade trees for you and your pup to enjoy.
On Belle Isle, the entire center of the island is given over
to the Belle Isle Park. The park offers a vast area of grass for the two of you
to enjoy, lots of walking trails, and tons of shade to relax
under. It's a great park to take the whole
family for a picnic and bring the four-legged member out for a little fun in the
sun.
On the mainland side is the Margaret Pace Dog Park that offers
two large size-dependent fenced-in areas for your dog to run around in off-leash.
The sections have water stations for the dogs and plenty of places for you to relax
in the shade while your pup gets out and socializes.
