Wag! Walkers know Little River
Little River is one of the oldest communities in the city dating back to the late 19th century and is home to the Cathedral of St. Mary built in 1923. This is a multi-use community encompassing a variety of residences ranging from single-family homes to apartment buildings. There is a large industrial area on the east side of the community. Today, it is home to a number of local businesses and a diverse range of residents. There are several small parks in the area and pet supply stores within a short driving distance. There are also numerous restaurants in the area serving up an interesting array of cuisines.
The namesake Little River runs to the north and I-95 runs through, giving you easy access for commuting. The climate is delightful with warm winters, hot summers, and plenty of rain. There are few days you can't go walking with your pup as long as you take an umbrella with you.
What is the terrain like in Little River?
The terrain here is a blend of suburban residential and industrial pavement. The good news is that you don't have to walk in the industrial area. Most of the residential spaces have sidewalks with grass berms for the two of you to walk along.
Unfortunately, or maybe fortunately, the ground here is pretty flat. How you choose to look at this is entirely up to you. Take it as a challenge of your ability to be creative! Remember, the more varied you make your walks, the more enjoyable they will be for your pooch.
The one problem with having nothing to stroll on but paved surfaces during the summer months is that you will need to plan your walks for the early morning hours. At this time, the pavement will still be cool. By the time late mid-to-late afternoon arrives, it will be hot enough to cause some significant discomfort or burns to sensitive puppy paws.
How many greenways are there in Little River?
There are several parks in Little River for you and your pup to investigate. At the northern tip of the community, the Larchmont Gardens Park runs along the Little River with a footbridge that crosses over to the El Portal Nature Trail. This is a long, narrow park with plenty of room to run.
Soar Park at the Parks & Recreation facility on NW 83rd St. offers a multipurpose court and plenty of grass. Tucked in the southwest corner of the neighborhood is Athalie Range Park where you will find a community swimming pool, a playground, basketball and tennis courts, a baseball field, and lots of wonderful green grass.
On the eastern side is the Little Haiti Soccer Park with a trail that goes all the way around the park, plenty of grass to play on, and picnic tables with canopies to hang out in the shade or have a family gathering.
