Wag! Walkers know Overtown (Washington Heights)
Overtown began life at the turn of the 20th Century as African Americans poured into the area to help build Henry Flagler's railroad. Over time, the neighborhood became a vibrant community filled with places to shop, restaurants, theaters, and more. Starting in the 1950s, the area went into decline as I-95, the Dolphin Expressway, and the Midtown Interchange were added. Today, it is home to a fully revitalized community that is once again a thriving hub of commerce, community gardens, and numerous public beautification projects.
Most of the roads are lined with sidewalks and even after years in decline, most of the area is clean and well-kept. There are pet supply stores and dog-friendly parks within close driving distance as are great places to eat. Like most of Miami, the weather runs from warm in the winter to hot in the summer, but there are few days when you cannot find time to go for a walk.
What is the terrain like in Overtown (Washington Heights)?
The terrain in Overtown is typically suburban in that you have plenty of wide streets with on-street parking, sidewalks for both of you to stroll along, and virtually no hills to challenge you. However, where once you might not have wanted to walk your dog in this area, recent revitalization efforts have restored not only the beauty to the second oldest community in the Greater Miami area, but also the safety. With such a blend of single-family homes, apartment complexes, multifamily units, and condominiums, there plenty of places for you to explore.
Throughout the neighborhood, there are numerous vacant lots you might be able to let your pup run around on along with one park on either side of I-95 to check out. If you want your walks to be challenging, you have to be creative. Take longer walks around more than one block, go different directions, or pick different times of day.
How many greenways are there in Overtown (Washington Heights)?
While there are two parks in the Overtown community, there is far more open space in the number of vacant lots. Beyond this, if you want more challenging places to walk, it's time to jump in the car and take a ride.
One great trip is out to Key Biscayne, home to Crandon Park, the Bill Baggs Cape Florida State Park, and a couple of smaller parks where you and your pup are sure to be welcomed. The Bill Baggs Cape Florida State Park is home to a historic lighthouse that was built in 1825 and there are multiple trails in the park for you to explore. The park is home to one of the top ten beaches in the country, great beach fishing, and places to picnic, along with a couple of cafes that serve up some tasty treats.
The only places you cannot take your pup is the beach, the wetlands, the lighthouse, and the Youth Camp and playground.
