Wag! Walkers know Canal Street Historic District

The Canal Street Historic District is home to a selection of retail businesses, restaurants, and at the western end, single-family, but historic homes. The eastern end of the street ends at the Indian River, the New Smyrna Beach Marina, Riverside Park, and the River Deck Marina. There are several other small parks in the area for you and Spot to play in and take a break from walking on pavement. There are plenty of great restaurants within a short drive from your home and, if you are looking for a pet supply store, there are quite a few nearby.

Best of all, when the summer temperatures are in the 90s, you are only a ten to fifteen minute drive to the beach where you and Fido can put in as many miles as you feel capable of handling. You can keep walking on the sands virtually all year round with winter temperatures in the 60s and 70s.

What is the terrain like in Canal Street Historic District?

The terrain here varies between retail at the east end and residential to the west. No matter which end of the street you live on, you will find plenty of sidewalks and streets to walk around. Canal Street will, however, cross the major thoroughfare of the N Dixie Freeway which can be particularly difficult to navigate, especially during rush hour or through peak tourist seasons. With so many businesses and establishments on the east end, you can anticipate some times when you'll want to stick to the more residential areas to avoid large crowds and busy traffic.

These residential spaces have plenty of small grassy spots to provide a quick respite from busier roadways or much-too-warm pavement, especially in the summer months. While most of the area is full of private lawns, you can also find small parking lots which can make for some good open spaces to roam. Just keep an eye out for cars entering and exiting.

How many greenways are there in Canal Street Historic District?

To the east, there are a couple of moderate public parks. Old Fort Park is the site of the ruins of an ancient fort whose origins are shrouded in mystery. There are trails to walk on here and plenty of grass to play on.

On the bank of the Indian River sits Riverside Park where you and Fido will find trails to walk on and access to the river to swim in and cool off.

Within a short drive to the north is the Doris Leeper Spruce Creek Preserve, covering more than 1,600 acres of swamps, creeks, trees, trails, and more for the two of you to enjoy playing around in and hiking along. There are several easy-to-find entrance points around the preserve which make it easy for you and your four-legged friend to enjoy hiking through for your daily walks. Don't forget to bring your favorite mosquito repellent as they are a year-round nuisance in Florida!
