Wag! Walkers know Coronado
Coronado is a triangular shaped neighborhood on the beachside about halfway down the New Smyrna Beach peninsula. While the community is not on the beach itself, even the furthest home from the dunes has no more than a ten-minute walk to the sand and surf. Homes here are larger single-family houses on quiet residential streets.
There is a condo at the east end of the community where it borders on South Atlantic Avenue. On the other side of this street is a row of condos with miles and miles of sand that run from the Ponce Inlet all the way south to Port Canaveral behind them.
Five minutes to the north is East 3rd Avenue where you can find a variety of shops, bars, restaurants, and a Publix grocery store where you can stock up your pantry and fridge and pick up plenty of dog food for your pup.
What is the terrain like in Coronado?
Living on the beachside peninsula typically means living in a bustling part of town. South Atlantic Avenue is the main north-south route down the coast. During rush hours and tourist seasons, this highway can become very congested. If you must cross the road, be sure you use the crosswalks and keep your dog on a short leash. This is for their safety as a short leash allows you to maintain better control in the event your pup gets spooked.
The ground here is relatively flat with little to challenge you and your pup when going out for walks. But with the beach and Indian River Lagoon Park nearby, you may find yourselves spending plenty of time hiking in one of these two locations rather than on the streets. Not only is it a lot safer, but it is also easier on your dog's paws! Both locations make a great place to go out and get some fresh air together.
How many greenways are there in Coronado?
The nearest green space is the Indian River Lagoon Park. The park offers dense shady woods and several walking trails for the two of you to hike on. You can hike down to the waters of the lagoon where you can take a boat out for a cruise around the Mosquito Lagoon Aquatic Preserve where you and your pup can check out the many waterways and islands at your leisure.
On the other side of South Atlantic Avenue is the beach, which presents the two of you with a variety of hiking terrains. On the inland side, the sand is very soft and dry, making a great work out. Once you have gone as far as you can, you can walk back on the wet sand that is much easier for both of you to walk on. Be sure you take some time out to cool off in the water at the end of your stroll!
