Wag! Walkers know Donlon Cove
Donlon Cove is a tidy little community right on the west bank of the Indian River North. You can see the Smyrna Yacht Club from your yard. There are only a few large homes in this cul-de-sac neighborhood. While you have an excellent view of the river, you are close to several places to eat, a few nearby stores, and the New Smyrna 12 AMC Theaters. Despite the strip mall only three blocks to the west, this is a relatively quiet neighborhood and an excellent place to take your dog for walks.
There is a green path running alongside the river from 6th Street all the way up to Riverside Park where you and your dog can spend a little time playing around on the grass. The walk and playtime will do you both good. Many of the nearby neighborhoods have shade trees to help keep you cool on those scorching summer days while you are out on your walks.
What is the terrain like in Donlon Cove?
The terrain here is a bit of a mix with a strip mall being so close to the residential area. The traffic out there tends to be very busy. But as long as you stay close to the river, you and your pup should not have a problem being able to get in your daily walks. The nearest sidewalks are on the opposite side of S Riverside Drive where you and your pooch can use the sidewalk to plow through as many blocks as you like.
You might want to keep back from US-1 as the traffic on this road tends to be very busy at all hours, especially during business hours. You may also want to keep your walks closer to the river after dark, especially if you walk your dog alone. The amount of traffic tends to bring a certain amount of walking crime. The riverfront provides a nice wide strip of grass to explore instead.
How many greenways are there in Donlon Cove?
Being this close to US-1 and the business area, there isn't a lot of green space nearby with the exception of the grass walkway going up to Riverside Park. This is a beautiful place to take your dog on their daily walks.
Right across the river to the north is the Doris Leeper Spruce Creek Preserve. If you are looking for a fun place to take your pooch for a hike, this is the spot. There are over 3 miles of trails within the preserve to explore. The trails take you to a 15-foot high observation tower from which you can see out over miles of swamps.
A little further to the east is the beach which runs for many miles from the Ponce Inlet. If you are looking for a place to take your dog for a workout, the soft sand on the beach is the perfect place.
