Wag! Walkers know Lakes of Sugar Mill
The Lakes of Sugar Mill is a small neighborhood of larger homes set in a very rural location outside of the city on Sugar Mill Drive. The community is an extension of the Sugar Mill Golf Course community on the opposite side of Pioneer Trail to the courses itself. The area is moderately developed with plenty of room to grow but is, for the moment, surrounded by woods that have a number of trails running through them.
If you like living in a quiet neighborhood, the Lakes of Sugar Mill is just the place. However, being this far out from the heart of town means you have to drive to amenities such as grocery stores, pet supply stores, and great places to eat. The good news is that you can reach all of these and more in less than twenty minutes by car. Do keep in mind that as the area continues to be developed, it may get busier!
What is the terrain like in Lakes of Sugar Mill?
How would one describe the terrain in an area that is continuously under development? Currently, the area is only moderately busy during rush hours, but with the ongoing construction of new neighborhoods, this is only going to increase. For the moment, you do have lots of woods to the west that are filled with trails for you and your dog to go walking on rather than sticking to the sidewalks.
If you are going to use the sidewalks, be aware that they are likely to have children moving around on them when the school buses are running. To keep everyone safe, be sure you keep your dog on a short leash just in case they get spooked by traffic or too many children. The one thing missing from the sidewalks is shade as the trees are still young and small, but will hopefully grow and provide the two of you valuable cover on hot summer days with time.
How many greenways are there in Lakes of Sugar Mill?
Currently, the woods to the west are relatively dense with plenty of trails. Depending on how far back into the woods you are willing to hike, there are a couple of large lakes you can check out as well.
If you don't mind going for a little drive with your pooch, you can take them to the New Smyrna Beach Dog Park. This park offers two fenced-in areas for smaller and larger dogs, watering stations, and a shady pavilion for you to sit under. This is a great way to let your dog perfect their socialization skills.
A short drive to the east will put you and your dog on the beach where there are miles of sand and surf to stroll along. The best time of day to take your dog for a walk along the dunes is early in the morning before the area has a chance to get busy with tourists and visitors.
