South Mainland incorporates several individual neighborhoods sandwiched between the railyards to the west and the Indian River to the east. This part of town is perfectly situated with plenty of restaurants to choose from within a short drive. The area is also the only route for those who live on Yacht Club Island.

Living here not only puts you close to the river, but it also puts you close to pet supply stores and just about any kind of shopping outlet you could possibly want. Do keep in mind that this is a busy part of town, so plan your walks accordingly.

This a very busy community with multiple retail stores and strip malls along with the associated traffic and some crime. You may find it better to take your dog for walks during the daylight hours or walk with more than just your dog. Remember that there is safety in numbers!

This is your typical urban neighborhood with a blend of single-family homes, retail stores, and more. The traffic tends to be pretty hectic and the two of you will need to be careful while out for your walks. Thankfully, you have plenty of sidewalks to hike along and there are plenty of shade trees to help keep you cooled off during the hot summer days.

Typically, the worst times of day are during the morning and evening rush hours, but as for pedestrian traffic, you don't see a lot around here. For the most part, you are likely to have the sidewalks to yourself which should make your dog feel pretty happy. There is a wide band of grass running from 6th Street to Riverside Park. This is an excellent place to take your dog for a walk where you can take in the fresh air and watch the boats go by.

Beyond the grassy walkway, there isn't much in the way of usable green space in South Mainland beyond a vacant lot or two. If you want green space, you can drive over to the beach where the two of you can enjoy hiking along miles of sand and surf. The ocean breezes will help keep you cooled down, especially if you go for your walks in the early morning hours before the beach gets crowded or the sun makes things too hot.

If you prefer hiking trails, forests, and swamps, then you need to take your dog for walks in the Spruce Creek Preserve. There are plenty of trails winding through the preserve. They can even take you all the way up to Rose Bay and back. Be sure you take your time and keep an eye out for the many different birds and animals who live in the area.
