The town of Palm Coast, Florida was developed as a wholly planned community. All of the streets, utilities, and services were installed for a density of 48,000 homes covering 42,000 acres of the 68,000 acres owned by the developer. The development of the area began in 1969 and includes 23 miles of saltwater canals and 46 miles of freshwater waterways with waterfront properties among the most popular. The streets were carefully planned to allow for maximum density with many homes literally feet from each other.
The are several pet-friendly parks and beaches in town and just across the Matanzas River. In the past 30 years, the population has expanded exponentially and now includes several restaurants from various cultures to taste. What is the terrain like in Eastern Palm Coast?
Palm Coast is one of those communities where you can potentially see for miles. As a planned community, the developers created a vast flat plain to build on. Shallow and deep saltwater canals lead to the Matanzas River which you can cruise on up to via St. Augustine and out the Matanzas Inlet into the Atlantic Ocean. They also added miles of freshwater canals for boaters to enjoy.
As for challenging terrain for you and your pup to walk on, your best bet is to head to the beach and enjoy the sun, sand, and surf. During the hottest months of the year, you should plan to go walking in the early morning hours as the pavement will have had time to cool down overnight. Keep in mind that when the ambient temperature is in the 80s, the pavement temperature will be in the 130s to 140s, which can burn the pads on your dog's paws within seconds.

If there is one thing that Eastern Palm Coast is not short of, it has to be greenways. Between the vast greenway running from the north that forms part of the Washington Oaks Gardens State Park down through the center of this section of Palm Coast, to the vast tracts of undeveloped wetlands in the city, and, of course, several dog-friendly parks for you and your pooch to investigate and enjoy.
Just across the waterway on Hwy A1A is the Old Salt Park, a dog-friendly place for you and your four-footed pal to hang out and make new friends. Located in the Hammock Beach Resort, your dog must remain on their leash and well-behaved, or you may be asked to leave.
In nearby Washington Oaks Gardens State Park, you will find plenty of trails to go hiking on and a small beach area to play on with plenty of shade under the live oaks.
