Top dog walkers in Harbor Point
Wag! Walkers know Harbor Point
Set between US-1 and the Halifax River, Harbor Point is a residential community of cookie-cutter homes, many of which sit alongside the river and have docks jutting out into the water. A small part of the neighborhood also lies on the west side of US-1. Both sides of this main roadway are lined with small businesses.
While there are a few businesses here, the main shopping zone is to the north along Dunlawton Avenue which also happens to be the main east-west road running from the beach all the way west to the I-95 interchange. This is a bustling stretch of road, but along it, you will find several big box retailers, grocery stores, and places to pick up everything you need for your dog.
For those of you who like to eat out from time to time, Dunlawton Avenue is also home to a fabulous selection of both chain and local eateries serving up everything from burgers to incredible seafood.
What is the terrain like in Harbor Point?
The entire neighborhood straddles US-1, meaning that it's a community that is split in two by one of the busiest highways in the city. Beyond the traffic that runs virtually non-stop on this highway, the roads through the neighborhoods are usually quiet.
With no sidewalks to use for your daily strolls, you should avoid walking during the height of the day, as there really isn't room for everyone on the street at the same time. When you do decide to go out, face the oncoming traffic and keep your dog on a short walking leash.
Like most residential areas, there are plenty other pedestrians in the area. If your pooch is not particularly socialized, you may want to exchange the flat terrain of the neighborhood for one of the nearby park areas or wooded spots. This may present better opportunities to get some space from others who are out and about.
How many greenways are there in Harbor Point?
Immediately to the south of the community on Riverside Drive is a large area of grass and trees that many people take their dogs out for walks on. It offers you both room to roam and play and your dog will definitely enjoy walking on the grass instead of the streets.
Over on the other side of Rose Bay is Spruce Creek Park where you and your pup can hike the trail, watch the dolphins at play in the bay, or hop in a canoe and go for a paddle, taking your dog along for the ride.
Further to the south is the Spruce Creek Preserve, a vast nature preserve where you and your pup can hike the various trails and go fishing. The trails are shared with cyclists, so you'll need to pay attention to what is going on around you to ensure you don't end up on the losing end of a man vs. bicycle battle.
