The intersection of South Nova Road and Herbert Street is a bustling intersection with businesses on all four corners that include a Cumberland Farms gas station, a Shell gas station, a restaurant, and a bar. However, surrounding the intersection, there are several large residential areas and an RV campground. The residential neighborhoods are family and dog-friendly, making great places to raise your family, including the one with the waggly tail.
While you can pick up a few necessities at the two convenience stores on the corners of South Nova Road and Herbert Street, less than five minutes south on South Nova is Dunlawton Avenue. All up and down both sides of this main east-west road through town, you will find big-box retailers, supermarkets, pet supply stores, and even home improvement stores. Along with all of this, many of the best chain and local restaurants are here to dine at.
The intersection of South Nova Road and Herbert Street tends to be bustling all day long, especially South Nova Road, as it is one of the main roads running from where it connects to US-1 north of Ormond Beach to where it reconnects at Rose Bay. You can expect the traffic to be hectic during rush hours and it's not the best road to walk your dog alongside, unless they are used to the noise and smells generated by high levels of traffic.
Herbert Street is a little quieter and safer, but as the feed road into several residential areas, rush hours are still going to create a lot of traffic. A far better choice would be to stick to walking your dog in one of the nearby residential areas. Once rush hours are past, these areas tend to quiet down and makes for a much safer place to take your dog walking during the day.
The various nearby neighborhoods have small parks, areas of woods, lakes, and small green spaces where you can take your dog out for a walk or perhaps a little play time. However, if you want a green space that is open to you and your dog, the nearest one is Reed Canal Park which offers a vast area of grass and trees. There is a small lake for you to walk around and a large area of trees to get out of the sun.
On the other hand, if you go south on Nova Road to Dunlawton and turn left, your journey will take you over the Halifax River and right out onto the beach. Find a place to park out of reach of the tide and take off walking with your dog. You can walk for miles enjoying the sun, sand, and surf. However, no matter how far you go, remember that you have to walk back unless you plan to call a cab!
