Wag! Walkers know Sawgrass Point
Sawgrass Point is a large community of upscale family homes
sandwiched between the southbound lanes of I-95 and South Williamson Boulevard. The area
was developed to offer young executives a place to live outside of the city without
being "out in the country." The neighborhood has communal green spaces
and a narrow band of trees running through it. The developers even added sidewalks
along both sides of the roads running through the area that give you and your
dog somewhere safe to work.
For a quick grocery run or that night when you realize you're
out of dog food, there is a Publix Supermarket to the north. If you need more, then head east under
the I-95 overpass where it becomes Dunlawton Avenue, the central shopping district
in Port Orange. Here, you will find Walmart, PetSmart, Pet Warehouse, and many other
stores, along with an excellent selection of restaurants for
you and your family to sample.
What is the terrain like in Sawgrass Point?
Sawgrass Point is a carefully laid out development with long
stretches of sidewalk for the two of you to walk along. There are plenty of
shade trees along the way to help keep the sun off your head or to stop under
and catch your breath. As for vehicular traffic, you will be dealing with a
small amount of rush hour traffic in the mornings and evenings. Sawgrass Point
is a family neighborhood with plenty of children.
Because this neighborhood has little variation in terrain, you can expect to see a fair amount of pedestrians in the area including families, children, teenagers, or other young adults out and about. If your pup is not the kind of pet that is enthralled by the idea of meeting so many strangers, you may want to move out into the nearby parks that offers more space to roam.
How many greenways are there in Sawgrass Point?
There several green spaces easily
accessible to the community where you and your dog are welcome to go for walks
and spend a little play time together. Between the neighborhood and the interstate, there is a vast expanse of grass with a sand track running around it. You and
your dog can run around here to your heart's' content or you can wander along the tracks
in the woods to the south.
If your dog doesn’t mind the drive, you can drive north
on South Williamson Boulevard until you hit US-92 where turning west will take you out to
Tiger Bay State Forest. The forest is just one small part of the 30,000 acres that make up the Tiger Bay Wildlife Management Area. Here, you and your
dog can hike the many miles of trails where you can marvel over how well the
area has grown back following the 1998 wildfire "Firestorm" that severely damaged over half of the area.
