Top dog walkers in Southern Oaks
Wag! Walkers know Southern Oaks
Southern Oaks is home to the City Center Sports Complex, the City Center Softball Fields, many of the town buildings and offices, including the Port Orange Regional Library, and the Kenneth W. Parker Amphitheater. Along with the Silver Sands Middle School, the area is home to the Nova Family Campground and lots of open space.
While those who live here are outside of the Southern Oaks community boundaries, neighborhoods like Gatewood, Brandy Hills, and Kingswood all sit around the borders. Within the boundaries, there are plenty of parks and trails for you and your pup to enjoy.
Just outside of the area is Dunlawton Avenue. This is one hectic stretch of road! Not only is it the main route into town from I-95, but most of the stores you are likely to need can also be found here including a Petco and a Pet Supermarket where you can pick up everything your dog needs as well.
What is the terrain like in Southern Oaks?
Being the city center, you might expect more traffic, but since vast sections of the area have been given over to the sports fields and complex along with the lake and amphitheater, you won't find much in the way of traffic except during business hours. Even then, the area has only limited vehicular access with the exception of the campground.
For a city center, the amount of grass found here might surprise most people and the fact that most of it is open for you and your dog to walk and play on might be even more shocking. One thing to keep in mind as you walk your dog is that the Silver Sands Middle School sits within the community. For this and many other reasons, any time you take your walks together, you must keep your dog on a leash and preferably a short one that gives you more control over their behavior!
How many greenways are there in Southern Oaks?
Oddly, the bulk of Southern Oaks is covered in grass, some by design, some simply by the fact it was there and left untouched. Either way, these areas give you and your dog plenty of room to run around and play.
To the northwest is Dunlawton Sugar Mill Gardens, a large area of carefully manicured botanical gardens and nature trails for you and your pup to stroll through. It makes a cooler place to go for walks in the shade of the dense tree coverage.
For something a little different, you can hop in the car with your pup and take Dunlawton Avenue over the bridge to Daytona Beach Shores or Wilbur-by-the-Sea. Here, you can park on the sand and take your dog for long walks, enjoying the sunshine and fresh salt air. The best time of day to go for hikes along the beach is early in the morning before it starts filling up with people and cars.
