Rolando Park is located in the southern section of the larger Rolando District. There are businesses along University Avenue on the north border where locals can access restaurants, shops, and services on foot. Along this commercial corridor, pet owners will find the dog-friendly restaurant, Garden Kitchen, where your pup can join you in the outdoor seating area and the El Cerrito Veterinary Hospital to meet your pet’s health needs.
Dog walkers can enjoy outdoor adventures with their pets throughout the year with warm, sunny weather being the norm. Winters are mild with frigid weather being extremely rare. Summers are hot and heat-related illnesses can become an issue if pet owners do not ensure that they and their dogs are well hydrated. Spring sees some overcast and rainy weather, however, heavy extended rain is uncommon and does not usually hamper daily excursions with your pooch.
The region has some level areas and many gentle hills. Dog walkers and their pets will experience some up and downhill treks, although most of the streets are not steep and curve around elevation changes. Local streets are lined with sidewalks that provide safe, separate walkways for you and your pet to stroll the neighborhood.
There are some low rise apartments in the area, mostly on the borders, but most of the homes in the area are single-family dwellings on well-landscaped properties. Drought tolerant plants, surfaces, and trees are popular in the community.
Rolando Park is located a few blocks north in Rolando Village. This park has extended hours of operation from 6AM to 10PM. These hours allows locals to use the park early in the morning and later in the evening when temperatures abate somewhat. The park is 3.5 acres in size and has facilities such as picnic and barbecue sites, benches, restrooms, a playground, and ball fields.
Residents can drive to The Ward Canyon Dog Park, which s a 20-minute drive to the west and has a fenced area for pups to play off-leash. Vista La Mesa Park is located just east of Orlando Park and can be accessed on foot. This 2.4-acre greenway has amenities like horseshoe pits, open grassy areas, a ball field, restrooms, and a small playground.
The natural area north of the elementary school also provides a greenway for dog walkers. Natural terrain in the area has elevation changes and footing can be treacherous in wet weather, so use caution.
