Atlanta weather is amenable to on foot travel with warm fall and spring seasons. Winters are relatively mild with few sub-freezing temperatures, but cool, wet weather does occur, necessitating rain gear and warmer outerwear. Snow and frigid temperatures are rare and rarely hamper dog walkers. Summers are hot and humid and you'll want to consider curbing strenuous activity when severe heat occurs.
The terrain is mostly flat in the Marietta Street area with some hills on the outer boundary and adjacent neighborhoods. The Marietta Street Artery does not have a lot of natural landscaping. Cement surfaces that are not shaded can become very hot on summer days and burn your dog's sensitive paw pads. You can purchase doggie boots to protect your pup's paws from hot pavement if you live in a developed urban area. This neighborhood is very busy with lots of traffic and dogs should be used to noise, traffic, and other people.
To the north of the Marietta Street Artery, the Georgia Institute of Technology property has sports fields and facilities as well as the adjacent Couch Park and is connected by paved pedestrian trails. These areas are within close walking distance for Marietta Street Artery residents and their pooches and make a good walking location.
Piedmont Park has miles of paved pedestrian trails for dog walkers to pursue with their pups. There are recreation areas and sports fields, playgrounds, and picnic sites in the park. A lake provides fishing and an amphitheater is the site of park events.
The Piedmont Dog Park is located under the Park Drive bridge, providing 3 acres of off-leash enclosed areas for pups to play. There are separate enclosures for large and small dogs with trails in the enclosure, seating, and restrooms for dog owners. Amenities like doggy-level water fountains provide hydration for park pups. There are even dog park concession stands that serve doggie popsicles on weekends!
