Wag! Walkers know Oakhurst

The historic Oakhurst neighborhood is a suburb of Atlanta, Georgia and is known as a modern, hip, and family-friendly community. With plenty of new businesses in the area, Oakhurst has plenty of cool cafes and restaurants. There are also several churches, a school, and quite a few parks. Additionally, the neighborhood frequently has local festivals and the local neighborhood association hosts socials, service opportunities, and holiday celebrations. However, Oakhurst is largely a residential community composed of standalone, single-family houses and the residential areas have tree-lined and quiet streets.

As the capital of the state of Georgia, Atlanta is a popular and thriving metropolis. It is home to prominent universities, professional sports teams, and well-known museums like the World of Coca-Cola, the Center for Civil and Human Rights, Martin Luther King Jr. National Historical Park, and the College Football Hall of Fame. While Atlanta is known for having heavy and stressful traffic, the Oakhurst neighborhood should be slower paced and quieter.

What is the terrain like in Oakhurst?

You and your pups should have a lovely and relaxing time walking through the Oakhurst neighborhood. With the beautiful, large trees that line the residential streets and the well-maintained sidewalks, Oakhurst is the ideal community for dog-walking! With the addition several public parks for you to explore, including a dog park, your pup should love walking around and exploring this Atlanta suburb while meeting other local pups.

There are a few hills in this neighborhood, but they shouldn't be too steep or pose any mobility issues for you or your pup. Just be careful during cold and rainy weather because the greater Atlanta area can experience some icy conditions sometimes!

The borders of the Oakhurst neighborhood include West Howard Avenue to the north, Kings Highway and South McDonough Street to the east, West Pharr Road and Northern Street to the south, and Madison and Winter Avenues to the west.

How many greenways are there in Oakhurst?

For a smaller neighborhood, there are quite a few public parks for you and your pup to explore! Most importantly, there is a dog park in this neighborhood. Oakhurst Dog Park is a large fenced-in area with grass and several benches. You may even find a few tennis balls that have been left behind by other local pups.

The largest greenway in the neighborhood is Oakhurst Park. Located centrally in the neighborhood, this park has tennis courts, basketball courts, a playground, and two fields for general recreation. Other local greenways include McKoy Park, McKoy Skatepark, and Harmony Park.

Finally, on the northern border of the neighborhood, you will find part of the Stone Mountain Trail. This 19-mile trail starts at Centennial Olympic Park, home of the 1996 Summer Olympics, and runs through several Atlanta suburbs before ending at Stone Mountain, a stone carving depicting several Civil War-era generals.
