Wag! Walkers know Scotts Crossing

The upper west side of Atlanta is the location of Scotts Crossing, a residential neighborhood with natural spaces, schools, and churches that has a very suburban, country-like feel. There are no shops or services within walking distance for residents, however, quiet residential roads make great walking areas.

Atlanta weather is usually cooperative with warm temperatures most of the year. Winter can be cool and rainy, but temperatures are not frigid and snow is very rare. A warm raincoat will usually suffice for regular dog walkers in the neighborhood. Summer months can see extreme heat with humidity that should be avoided. When temperatures climb and are accompanied by excessive humidity, heat-related illnesses become a real danger for people and pets that become dehydrated, overexposed, or overstressed. Walk at cooler times of day, pack lots of water for you and your dog, and pick shady locations to stroll.

What is the terrain like in Scotts Crossing?

Industrial activities along the rail lines in Scotts Crossing and the large rail yard on the east side don't make for a pedestrian-friendly areas with large trucks, noise, and trains. The tracks present a hazard when walking to the north or east and should only be crossed at designated pedestrian crossings.

Residential areas in the neighborhood consist of apartment complexes and modest single-family homes. There is a unique arc-shaped apartment complex off of Abner Place NW.  Private properties are well landscaped with lots of trees, but the terrain is hilly and when walking the neighborhood, you and your dog will experience some climbs.

Many residential roads do not have sidewalks which is not ideal and pedestrians have to share the road with local traffic, so use caution. There are schools and churches with large properties and large green spaces between residential regions and other facilities in the area providing natural landscaping.

How many greenways are there in Scotts Crossing?

There are plenty of natural areas in and around Scotts Crossing to explore with your dog, but be careful of natural trails made by locals and wildlife that are unmaintained and may have treacherous terrain, especially near waterways.

To the southwest, Westside Reservoir Park is located at the site of an old quarry. The park is extensive with large natural areas providing natural habitat for local wildlife. There are ponds and lots of open and treed areas with trails throughout. Take your dog leashed in this large greenway to avoid having your pup inadvertently take off after some woodland creature and bring supplies to clean up after them to be respectful to other users and maintain the park.

Trails in the park are designed to connect to the larger Atlanta Beltline trail system which provides miles of maintained paved and unpaved walkways you can hike with your hound in the Atlanta area.
