Atlanta weather is walkable with temperatures within the comfort zone for much of the year. Winters are cool, but not frigid, with more than the average amount of rainfall. A good rain jacket will keep dog walkers warm and dry on strolls with their furry friends. Summers in the Springdale area are hot and humid and daytime highs can be uncomfortable. Take your pet for a walk earlier or later in the day to avoid overheating and dehydration and don't forget to make sure your pooch is comfortable and hydrated too!
Springlake is a beautifully treed, cool, shady neighborhood located on the north side of Atlanta. The terrain is hilly and there are some long, steady inclines that dog walkers in the area will have to navigate on walks with their dog. If you or your dog have mobility issues, you will need to plan your route carefully to avoid steep hills.
Most of the area is made up of single-family homes. There are some newer housing complexes and multi-family dwellings on the southwest corner where commercial activity is also centered. Houses are very attractive with well-landscaped properties, green lawns, and lush gardens. Thick trees surround the neighborhood on greenways and on private properties that provide welcome shade on hot, humid summer days.
Many areas have separate sidewalks for pedestrians and pups, but some do not. If you end up on a residential street without a pedestrian path, walk facing oncoming traffic and be vigilant.
Atlanta Memorial Park sits on the northeast side of the neighborhood and contains a golf course, tennis center, playground, and lots of hiking trails including the Peachtree Battle Trail, an accessible paved trail that takes dog walkers south.
The Springlake Park is a wooded natural area extending into the Spring Lake neighborhood. Because Atlanta summer days can be dangerously hot and humid, this heavily wooded park is an ideal place to take your canine companion for a stroll. In winter, trees may offer some protection for rain as well. On the west end of the greenway is Ellsworth Park which has a playground and is situated close to local eateries.
Other parks nearby in adjacent neighborhoods include Tanyard Creek Park, Underwood Hills Park, and Beaverbrook Park. These parks may be walkable depending on your location in Springlake and have paved and unpaved trails for walking with your dog through trees and open spaces.
