Weather in Atlanta is warm and sunny for much of the year. Winters are colder and rainy, however, snow is rare and sub-freezing temperatures are uncommon. A warm rain jacket will usually suffice. Summer heat can be hard to beat! Hot, humid summers mean the risk of heat-related illness. Plan walks for cooler times of the day to avoid extreme heat.
The Underwood Hills neighborhood was developed in the early 20th century and modest homes in the area reflect the architecture of that period. The area is well treed, landscaped, and private properties have attractive yards and gardens.
There are train tracks running through the west side of the neighborhood that pose a barrier to pedestrian traffic. The tracks should only be crossed at designated crossing points. The region is also hilly and dog walkers will experience some climbs. Be prepared for some hiking and avoid strenuous climbs in hot weather.
Some of the residential streets in the area do not have separate sidewalks for pedestrians and pets which means you will need to share the road with local traffic. Keep your dog on a leash, walk facing oncoming traffic, and be vigilant for cars in this heavily treed, hilly area with curvy roads as sightlines can be impaired and vehicles may not see pedestrians well.
Underwood Hills Park is a popular destination for area residents and their dogs. This 10-acre park is situated near a creek and there are many amenities. Underwood Hill Park includes a mini free library, picnic areas, a pavilion, sports fields and facilities, and trails to stroll with your pup.
The Mantissa Street Park is also situated in the neighborhood and is 2 acres in size with a heavily wooded area that provides shade for park goers.
The Westside Reservoir Park is not far from Underwood Hills. It is located to the southwest and Atlanta Memorial Park is a short distance to the east. Both of these parks provide larger areas to explore with your pups. Westside Reservoir Park is connected to the Atlanta Beltline Trails which provide miles of the greenways to hike with your hound. The Atlanta Memorial Park has natural areas as well as a golf course and tennis center with lots of paved and unpaved walking paths.
