Wag! Walkers know Fairhaven

The Fairhaven region of Davenport, Iowa is centered around Fairhaven Road and includes the adjacent neighborhoods. Fairhaven is mostly residential, but there are some large commercial areas along interstates and freeways, as well as some major thoroughfares in the district. Elmore Avenue has a large shopping district and is within walking distance for Fairhaven Road residents. Kimberley Road also has many restaurants, shops, and services and there is a movie theatre to the north along the interstate, however, the multi-lane roads and interchanges associated with them impede pedestrian travel in these areas.

The Davenport climate can also hamper walking in the wintertime when the cold, snowy weather is inhospitable to on foot travel. Summers are hot and sunny, but the mercury can soar at the height of the day and pedestrians and pets may choose to avoid walking in uncomfortably hot temperatures. Some spring showers and storms may warrant an umbrella or rain gear when walking the neighborhood.

What is the terrain like in Fairhaven?

There are several main roads and two large freeways with interchanges in the Fairhaven region. These areas are dangerous for pedestrians and pets and should be avoided. Pheasant Creek, Goose Creek, and Hamlin Creek run through the district and have ravines and natural areas around them with rougher terrain. These waterways can only be crossed on foot where bridges are located.

There are several large cemeteries on the west side of the community. Most of the area consists of single-family homes with spacious properties. Sprawling lawns and mature shade trees are predominant characteristics of the area while there is also an apartment complex located along Eastern Avenue with many multi-family buildings. Commercial corridors and shopping areas have more developed and paved areas with large parking lots. The landscape in the neighborhood is moderately hilly with sloping terrain, although hills are not particularly steep and are walkable for most residents and dogs.

How many greenways are there in Fairhaven?

Creeks and ravines in the area have natural greenways where residents can walk with their dogs, however, paths are not maintained and footing can be variable depending on the weather and terrain. Just south of the region, the Duck Creek Park provides 211 acres of recreational space with a golf course, tennis courts, picnic shelters, a lilac garden and gazebo, a baseball diamond, and the Duck Creek greenway.  This greenway is paved and maintained and is 13.5 miles long, providing access to other area greenways and trails. Dogs are permitted on the greenways but must be kept on a leash.

A short drive to the east, the Crow Creek Dog Park has an off-leash area for your rover to romp. This large 7-acre fenced park has a separate area for small and older dogs and facilities such as bag dispensers and waste receptacles, restrooms, and doggie drinking fountains with plenty of play space for your pooch.
