Wag! Walkers know Hamburg

The district of Hamburg is a residential neighborhood just north of the Davenport central business district. Hamburg is a historic district where the region's middle and upper-income German citizens settled in the 19th and 20th centuries. The area is overflowing with amazing historic homes which make great walking destinations and the nearby downtown district and main thoroughfares running through Hamburg provide plenty of commercial businesses providing services to area residents.

Residents with furry friends that like to take their daily walk here will find that summers are warm and pleasant with some particularly hot days where strenuous walks should be avoided. Winters are the opposite and are cold and snowy. Be aware of the forecast and avoid walking on days when blizzards are imminent. If you are prepared with warm clothing and good footwear, you can enjoy walking on most winter days and if your dog needs a winter coat, you can find one at a local pet store.

What is the terrain like in Hamburg?

Hamburg is located on a steep bluff and the terrain is hilly, especially in some areas. Be prepared for some climbs while walking this neighborhood with your dog. If you're not feeling very energetic, plan your route to avoid steep hills.

This historic neighborhood contains an amazing array and concentration of historic homes with a wide variety of interesting architectural styles. Homes in Hamburg were built in the late 19th and early 20th century and include houses with Greek Revival, Victorian, Queen Anne, Gothic Revival, Second Empire, Georgian Revival, and Mission Revival styles that provide variety and beauty to the area. Homes have beautifully landscaped properties with large mature trees and landscaping features. Other moderate homes are also located in the area and there are several churches and commercial buildings also located nearby. The downtown core and Mississippi River are located to the south of this residential neighborhood and main roads running north-south provide access.

How many greenways are there in Hamburg?

Herrington Park is located in the Hamburg area and this 2-acre park provides a basketball court, a playground, and picnic shelter, as well as open and treed spaces for area residents to enjoy.

To the west, Jefferson Park has baseball diamonds and basketball courts and is surrounded by trees. Natural trails along the outside of the trees provide a greenway for residents to walk with their dogs adjacent to quiet residential streets.

If you're up for a challenging climb, just west in Riverview Terrace, the Riverview Terrace Park is located on a steep hill and provides panoramic views of the surrounding area and the river. Lafayette Park is located to the south and this urban park also has a playground and basketball courts as well as an informal ball diamond. The train tracks run alongside this park so make sure you keep your dog leashed in the area to avoid the hazard of passing trains.
