Wag! Walkers know Belmont Terrace
Belmont Terrace is a neighborhood located in the far northwest corner of Chicago. Directly to its west is the Indian Boundary Golf Course, and to the south is River Grove. It has a little over 2,000 residents and is populated mainly by middle-class families looking for a suburban area near Chicago. The streets are lined with pleasant homes, gardens, and trees, and the neighborhood is somewhat removed from the urban sprawl of the inner city. Aside from a few small parks and schools, Belmont Terrace is mostly residential.
The summers in Chicago can be lovely and ideal for walking a dog, but the winter season brings low temperatures and high winds. Biting gusts coming off of Lake Michigan can make the colder months tough to walk in, so it will be important to take precautions for both you and your dog if you decide to brave colder weather in Belmont Terrace.
What is the terrain like in Belmont Terrace?
The terrain in Belmont Terrace is mostly flat and mild, like much of the city of Chicago. You will not see many hills, steep inclines, or dramatic changes in elevation while on a walk which can present an issue if you're more of a hiker. Most of what you will see on a walk through this neighborhood are trees, well-manicured yards, and a few small businesses.
You also will not be in a densely populated area and won’t be dealing with much foot or street traffic. Unlike the central areas of Chicago that have mass transit, taxis, and skyscrapers, Belmont Terrace is distinctly suburban and easygoing. With only a few major thoroughfares, the neighborhood will not provide any serious challenges for any walk. Though the residential sections and main roads will make for pleasant walks, there are also multiple parks and greenways that you can venture into for a change of pace with your dog.
How many greenways are there in Belmont Terrace?
There are only two major parks within the bounds of Belmont Terrace: Hiwatha Park and Indian Boundary Golf Course. Both parks extend well beyond the bounds of the neighborhood, with only small sections coming within its limits. Hiwatha Park is located in the upper northeast corner of the neighborhood. The park totals 12 acres and it has basketball courts, baseball fields, soccer fields, and an indoor recreation center and gymnasium. It has vast expanses of green space, with concrete walkways running throughout its center which can make for some good opportunities for a daily walk.
Indian Boundary Golf Course is located on a massive forest preserve directly east of Belmont Terrace. In its center is a large golf course, but it is surrounded by acres and acres of forestland and parks. It is within close walking distance of Belmont Terrace, and offers plenty for you and your dog to explore within its bounds.
