Wag! Walkers know Douglas
Douglas is a residential community on the south side of Chicago, Illinois. It is the home of the Illinois Institute of Technology and contributes to part of the shoreline of Lake Michigan. It is the home of 31st Street Beach and harbor, as well as a number of parks and fields.
Douglas has a distinct lack of pet supply stores, groomers, and veterinary services. The nearest store available is Bark and Bites to the west of the l-94 Expressway. It offers everything you could need for pooch grooming, toys, and food. Alternatively, just north of Douglas in Chinatown, you have the Pet and Home Pros store. If you travel north from here, you’ll find a wealth of pet services.
In general, Douglas is pretty lacking in the pet care department, but since Chicago in general offers a range of choices, you’re never too far from somewhere that’ll be able to provide you with everything you need.
What is the terrain like in Douglas?
As a coastal area, Douglas is pretty low lying, with plenty of areas that are totally flat such as the beach and riverside trails. Your walks should, therefore, be pretty leisurely along the flat sidewalks. Any shoes and clothes will be appropriate in grassy parks and beaches, though you will probably fare better with trainers. Remember to keep an eye on the temperature in case there is some hot pavement to contend with.
Douglas is a largely built-up area with a number of high rise apartment blocks, busy roads, and parking lots. Despite this, there are a fair number of parks and empty fields, as well as a lot of natural terrains. For example, Lake Meadow high-rise apartments are surrounded by flat fields which are great for taking a stroll on the way towards the beach or harbor. This is a perfect example of the mix of both inner-city terrain and beautiful grassy areas that will suit you and your canine friend.
How many greenways are there in Douglas?
Douglas has a whole host of walking trails that are perfect for taking your pooch for a run around. Along the Lake Michigan coastline, there are a number of lakeside trails that will give you beautiful views over the water, take you past the harbor, and along to 31st Street Beach. This is a sandy swimming beach that is ideal for giving your pal a little dip, but make sure you look out for any designated doggie areas.
Dunbar Park just off of Prairie Shores is an inner-city park offering wide open spaces. There are a few playing fields which are often in use by sports teams, so at these times, you may want to keep your pup on the leash.
Mandrake Park is another space which mainly consists of playing fields. At quiet times, it will be great to let your pooch loose, but please be aware that there may be sports teams in certain areas.
