Wag! Walkers know Edgewater Beach
Edgewater Beach is a neighborhood located seven miles to the north of Chicago’s downtown area. It runs right along the shore of Lake Michigan and it is a popular area due to its bountiful shopping and dining establishments, as well as its parks and recreational areas. Several major thoroughfares run through the central sections of the neighborhood, but it also has many residential sections with houses, condos, and apartments. It is located next to multiple large parks and runs parallel to major shoreline destinations such as Hollywood Beach.
The summers in Chicago can be beautiful and perfect for dog walking, but the winter is when Chicago earns its reputation as the 'Windy City.' With already frigid temperatures, the gusts that come off of Lake Michigan can be bone-chilling, so it will be important to take the proper precautions if you are going to walk with a dog. Consider bundling up in the cold weather for maximum comfort.
What is the terrain like in Edgewater Beach?
The terrain in Edgewater Beach is similar to much of the Chicago area: flat, with few hills, inclines, or dramatic shifts in elevation. The only hills you might see on a walk would be around some overpass bridges on Bryn Mawr Avenue, where there are some trees and grassy areas for walking. Otherwise, look forward to an easy casual stroll.
The neighborhood has a good mix of natural and artificial terrain with some high-rise condo areas mixed in with multiple parks and greenways. Though it is a pleasant, popular location in Chicago, Edgewater Beach doesn’t have an overwhelming amount of foot or street traffic. During rush hour, busy thoroughfares will fill up with cars, but the residential sections still make for great dog walking. The neighborhood’s easy access to multiple beaches on Lake Michigan will give you another option for your walks if you grow tired of the concrete and parks.
How many greenways are there in Edgewater Beach?
There are 11 parks and greenways in Edgewater Beach and it is located adjacent to a very large green area that runs parallel to the beaches of Lake Michigan. One of the parks in Edgewater Beach, Park No. 517, straddles the corner of N. Sheridan Rd. and W. Thorndale Avenue. It has multiple walkways, some open grass, a large sculpture at its center, and it is located right across the street from Lane Beach. In the northeast corner of Edgewater Beach, there is Berger Park which has a community garden, cultural center, café, and playground.
Some of the best areas for walking are located just outside of the Edgewater Beach neighborhood limits. Edgewater Dog Park is tucked just south of Hollywood Beach near the coast which has 15,000 square feet of green space that is fenced in on the perimeter. Areas to the north and south of this dog park also offer great walking opportunities.
