Wag! Walkers know Hegewisch
The community of Hegewisch was built as a company town by Adolph Hegewisch in 1883. He was the president of the U.S. Rolling Stock Company and wanted to create a 'working man's' town. The area was home to several steel mills which brought many high paying jobs to the city. Now with the mills gone, Hegewisch is one of the few communities to maintain its middle-class standing. Located next to the William W. Powers State Recreation Area and with several parks and pet care centers in driving distance, there is also the Sibley Animal Hospital located just to the south in Burnham.
While not located too close to the center of the city, this community is a more beautiful place to live with a lower-than-average crime rate and a small selection of local stores and chain restaurants. Like most of Chicago, Hegewisch gets very hot in the summer and brutally cold in the winter thanks to the storms that form off of the lake.
What is the terrain like in Hegewisch?
If the word flat were a noun, a picture of Hegewisch would be posted next to it in the dictionary. Here, there are no rolling hills, no steep paths to climb, and nothing but flat streets with tree-lined sidewalks for you and your pup to stroll along. This means that they are likely more preferable for those with disabilities or for walking beginners looking for an easy path. Most of the main roads running through the community have sidewalks with grassy areas and lots of shady trees for the two of you to walk underneath together. However, the alleyways are narrow and are not the best place to go for a walk as there aren't any sidewalks for the two of you to stay out of the way of cars being driven to their garages. Many people have come here to find a little peace, which is easy to find in this tiny pocket community.
How many greenways are there in Hegewisch?
Finding green spaces in this community is a bit more challenging than in many areas of Greater Chicago. However, Mann Park offers a large green space where the two of you can go for walks and playtime. Just on the other side of S. Avenue O. is the William W. Powers Recreational area with 580 acres of fun in the sun. It's located right on Wolf Lake where there are opportunities for fishing and lots of hiking trails for you and your pooch to check out. The park allows dogs as long as they are on a leash and you clean up after them.
Hegewisch Marsh offers you a rare oasis in the middle of a highly industrialized part of the city. Take walks along the many trails that thread through the largest wetland in the city. Many different creatures call this park home, so if you are going to visit, be sure your pooch is on his leash and his best behavior.
