The Magnificent Mile is located on Chicago Michigan Avenue and goes from the Chicago River to Oak Street. This street is a main thoroughfare within Chicago and is home to the largest shopping district in Chicago. The area has many tall buildings and famous landmarks including the Wrigley building and the Drake Hotel. This district was created in the early 1900s after the Great Chicago Fire. It replaced the factories and warehouses that had filled the area.
There are a variety of businesses in this area that cater to the urban dog. Jolly Dog Training and Fitness is on the Chicago River and offers an opportunity for your dog to be trained and get in shape. Towards the coast, City Pets Chicago will have your dog looking great in no time. There are several good parks in this area so that you can get away from walking on the city streets as well.
Walking down the Magnificent Mile is very much city walking with tall buildings on either side and shops on the street level. There are several great restaurants with outdoor seating which are a great place to relax with your dog for a few minutes during your walk. It is a good idea to pack a good chew toy or something for your dog to chew or play with while you eat.
For a change from the city streets, you can go to the River Esplanade Park where your dog can walk on a loose leash or you can enjoy being on a bike or skateboard at their side without worrying about traffic. On the other side of the river, the Chicago Riverwalk offers even more exploration opportunities. You can follow the river all the way to the marina and the Ohio Street Beach where your pup can enjoy testing their footing on the sand.
The Magnificent Mile is in the heart of Chicago and is very urban, but there are lots of opportunities to get away from the city streets. If you head west, you can find your way to the Larrabee Dog Park where your dog can play off-leash with their friends.
You can also follow the Chicago River from the boundary of the Magnificent Mile on either side along the Chicago Riverwalk or the River Esplanade. Whichever path you take, you will find it lined with lovely mature tree cover and plenty of views of the river as well as cool breezes on hot Chicago days. When you get to DuSable Harbour, you will find wide expanses of grassy areas and lots of beautifully manicured terrain to enjoy with your dog.
The Ohio Street Beach is a great place to cool off on hot days. With such an array of options, you will never be short on greenways to explore.
