Wag! Walkers know Mount Greenwood
Mount Greenwood is located in southwest Chicago and is roughly 16 miles away from the downtown area. This area is largely residential and is home to middle-class, conservative families. It is also well-known that many first-responders, like police officers and firefighters, live in this community!
Historically home to the last farm in the Chicago-area, Mount Greenwood has become a residential community. However, the neighborhood is also home to Saint Xavier University, several schools, and a variety of pet-related business—like Animal Krackers Pet Center, Park Pet Shop, and several pet groomers! There are also a variety of greenways in the neighborhood and it is well-known for its local cemeteries, making the area a good place with an array of amenities to explore on a daily outing.
Like the rest of Chicago, Mount Greenwood can experience quite a variety of temperatures and types of weather. Average temperatures range from 18° - 84°F but can also get significantly colder or warmer than that.
What is the terrain like in Mount Greenwood?
Chicago is essentially located in a great plains area, so it is usually rather flat. Mount Greenwood is no exception, as there is very little change in elevation throughout the neighborhood. If you're looking for a more challenging hike, you may want to venture a little outside of the neighborhood, or even the city, to find what you're looking for. Furthermore, because it is a large residential community, there is a good mix of artificial and natural terrain. There are well-maintained sidewalks, grassy areas, large trees to provide shade, and parks throughout the community for you to enjoy at your pup's side.
Most roads are in the quieter residential area, but larger thoroughfares, like South Pulaski Road, West 103rd Street, West 111th Street, and West 115th Street, may be busier and more congested. Always exercise caution even on the shortest of walks, but especially so in areas that may be considered high-traffic!
How many greenways are there in Mount Greenwood?
There are two traditional parks in Mount Greenwood. McKiernan Playground Park is a small, 1.8-acre park that has two baseball diamonds and a playground. While it does not have an enclosed dog park, McKiernan is still a good place for a walk and to people and pet-watch! Make sure to keep your dog on-leash during a visit in order to prevent any run-ins with other pedestrians or dogs.
Mt. Greenwood Park, however, is a larger 24-acre park. This park features several gardens, a swimming pool, an ice rink, an interactive playground, baseball fields, tennis courts, and a rentable gymnasium. This is a perfect place for a bit of a larger walk and your pup may catch a fly ball from a local baseball game if he's lucky!
Additionally, immediately beyond the border of Mt. Greenwood, there are several cemeteries. However, most of these cemeteries do not allow pets, even if they are on a leash.
