The Near North Side is one of Chicago's community areas comprised of several neighborhoods. Located just north of the downtown core along Lake Michigan, this affluent residential neighborhood also hosts exclusive retail boutiques and restaurants, car dealerships, offices, and has a thriving nightlife, arts, and theatre scene. This area contains what is referred to as the Magnificent Mile: a stretch of commercial and high-end stores, an upscale mall, exclusive restaurants, luxury hotels, and office towers. Shops, eateries, and services are distributed throughout the neighborhoods, along with the waterfront parks, and riverside trails, making this area highly walkable, and many residents with pets take advantage of the many attractions that can be explored on foot in the district.

Chicago experiences severe weather which can impede walking in the city, however, this district's proximity to Lake Michigan can moderate some of the more extreme temperatures in summer and winter, making it an overall enjoyable atmosphere for walks.

This highly urbanized community has many major thoroughfares and traffic. This district is the second largest of the downtown communities of Chicago and features the most skyscrapers and the densest residential population. The lake is located to the east and is a dominant feature of the landscape. Some sections do not conform to a traditional urban grid pattern in this neighborhood. The north branch of the Chicago River runs through Near North Side communities and contains it’s only island, Goose Island. Also marking the landscape of this neighborhood is the Magnificent Mile: a stretch of skyscrapers where the famous Water Tower landmark and clock are located. Although the Near North Side is a large community, it is relatively flat, and pedestrians and pets can walk for long distances in the neighborhood without difficulty.  There are so many attractions to take in walking in the area that it is easy to lose track of time!
