Wag! Walkers know Near North
Of all the downtown communities in Greater Chicago, Near North is the second largest in total square mileage. It also has the most skyscrapers and the largest overall population. This part of Chicago is considered to be one of the most affluent as can be seen by the Navy Pier, Gold Coast, and Magnificent Mile. Near North Side is recognized as the oldest section of Chicago having been first settled in 1780 as 'Eschecagou.'
Near North Side consists of a number of communities including Cabrini-Green, Goose Island, Old Town, Gold Coast, River North, and Streeterville. Sitting right on the shores of Lake Michigan, the weather here can be amazing in the summer as you spend time with your dog at the Concrete Beach or Oak Street Beach. A stroll through the community can take you past an incredible array of eateries where you can sample an incredibly diverse range of cultural dishes and experience what the community has to offer.
What is the terrain like in Near North?
Like most of the Greater Chicago area, Near North is very flat and unexciting. You might think this would make for some very dull walks for you and your pup. However, if you put your mind to it, you and your puppy can make the most of the terrain you have to work with. You can try taking different routes, walking your pup to various parks, or better yet, take him for a walk along the beaches and shoreline of Lake Michigan.
Most of the residential areas feature wide sidewalks, plenty of shady trees, and the grassy regions running alongside them for your pup to walk or do his business on. Keep in mind that areas like Streeterville are heavily built-up and not the best places to walk a dog, but the beaches and lake are only a few blocks from downtown where there is plenty of hotels and restaurants for you to choose from.
How many greenways are there in Near North?
Near North is lucky enough to have an excellent selection of parks throughout the community along with green spaces scattered around, seemingly at random, for you to enjoy. One of the larger parks is Stanton Park located in the northwest corner. Stanton Park offers large grassy areas, a pair of baseball and softball diamonds, and basketball courts. Located next to Skinner North Classical School, the park is an excellent place to take your pup to play and burn off some of that excess energy.
In the southeast corner, sitting on Lake Michigan is Jane Addams Park and Milton Lee Olive Park, both of which offer plenty of grass to play on and access to the Ohio Street Beach. The parks are located next door to the Chicago Children's Museum and the Navy Pier. Despite the number of high-rise buildings, the community of Near North has a lot to offer regarding greenspace for dog lovers.
