Wag! Walkers know North Center
North Center is a large neighborhood in Chicago, located northwest of downtown but still on the eastern side of the Chicago River. It is bordered by the neighborhoods of Avondale, Lake View, and Ravenswood. It is a popular area both for residential living and for commercial attractions, with many major thoroughfares running through the neighborhood. One famous section of North Center is its six-way intersection, where multiple major roads like W. Irving Park Rd. and N. Lincoln Avenue all intersect and multiple bars and dining spots line the sides of the streets for residents and locals to visit on their daily outing.
Chicago can be beautiful in the summertime and ideal for dog walking. But it is known for its brutally cold winters due to biting winds coming off of Lake Michigan. When walking with a dog, you will want to take the proper precautions for warmth in the colder months.
What is the terrain like in North Center?
Like most of the Chicago area, North Center’s terrain is mostly flat and mild. There are almost no steep hills, inclines, or dramatic changes in elevation. The environment is mostly artificial as well, comprised of mostly buildings and sidewalks which lend themselves to its distinctly urban feel to it. There are some trees that run along the sides of all the streets, but it is mostly a concrete environment.
The foot and street traffic is likely to be heavy most of the time as North Center is a heavily-traveled area. The major thoroughfares will be jammed during rush hour times and there will always be a decent amount of foot traffic around the main roads. However, this doesn’t rule out North Center as a good spot for dog walking. The residential areas of the neighborhood usually have less commotion and there are also multiple greenways and parks within North Center’s boundaries.
How many greenways are there in North Center?
North Center has only a handful of parks and greenways, but there is plenty within the neighborhood and directly outside of it to explore. Hamlin Park, located in the southwest corner of the neighborhood, is a mid-sized park with a multi-purpose field and several trails around its green space. There are some smaller playgrounds scattered throughout the neighborhood as well. In the easternmost portion of North Center, there is Clark Playlot Park which runs parallel to the north branch of the Chicago River. It has open green space and small trails for dog walking.
If you go outside of North Center to walk your dog, you can head up to Horner Park which lies just northeast of the neighborhood. It is a very large park with multiple baseball fields, and a huge green space at its center. It has banks that lead off to the Chicago River to the west, and an indoor recreational facility.
