Wag! Walkers know River West
Riverwest is a tiny neighborhood within West Town on the north branch of the Chicago River. This was primarily an industrial area with large loft buildings, but most loft buildings were converted to residences in the 80s and several housing developments have also been built in the area.
Several blocks of this neighborhood are historic residential areas while others have restaurants and clubs. The Chicago Academy for the Arts and St. John Cantius Church are both in this neighborhood as well, making for a very diverse walk within this small neighborhood. Businesses tend to be clustered along North Milwaukee Avenue and the streets immediately surrounding. The VCA Lakeshore Animal Hospital is located at the border of Riverwest on West Chicago Avenue, so you can feel confident of a short walk to the vet whenever you need it. Lots of dog parks in this area make it a great place to walk your dog.
What is the terrain like in River West?
This is a flat neighborhood with a lot of variety from block to block. Residential areas are primarily composed of apartment buildings and renovated lofts, with some upscale townhomes or individual homes on some streets.
Generally, you will need to walk your dog on a close leash throughout most of Riverwest, as there is no divider between sidewalk and street and yards, if present, are generally small and fenced. Lots of mature tree cover and attractive buildings still make this a pleasant walk.
For a more varied walk, you can cross the bridge into Riverfront and visit Montgomery Park, just across the river from Riverwest. This lovely park provides lots of grass and attractive landscaping, as well as a lovely winding trail along the water. The Larrabee Dog Park is a small but fun place to let your dog play with her friends with a variety of terrains including grassy area, sand, and concrete.
How many greenways are there in River West?
This area caters to dog lovers, with three separate parks within easy walking or biking distance of Riverwest. Furthest south, the Park 551 dog-friendly area provides a small concrete space where your dog can run around off leash and play. While this is quite a small space, there is a significant safety-gated area, so this could be a good place to introduce your dog to one other friend for a safe and private introduction and play date.
Very near this park, the K2 Apartments Dog Park also offers a small gated area on sand and grass where your dog can play. Just across the bridge, the Ohio Place Dog Park gives you a larger natural area with good tree cover where your dog can play with her friends off-leash. Finally, the Larrabee Dog Park is a great little spot on the river for you and your pup to enjoy any time.
