Sauganash was once part of a land tract and was annexed by Chicago in the 1880s. It is named after Billy Caldwell, who was known as Sauganash, which means 'English speaking'. Billy Caldwell was born to an Irish father and a Mohawk mother, eventually becoming the leader of the Potawatomi. This tribe, led by Caldwell, was an important negotiator during the difficult relations between the native Americans and colonists in the area.

There is lots of beautiful natural area in this region, centered around the winding north branch of the Chicago River.
W. Peterson Ave divides this neighborhood but most businesses are located on N. Cicero Ave including several nice restaurants with outdoor seating, like East of Edens.

The north branch of the Chicago River runs through this forest, providing you with gorgeous views along the water as well as the opportunity to challenge your dog and yourself to difficult terrain for a mentally and physically exhausting hike.
The LaBagh Woods is also centered around the river, but this forest offers more open grassy spaces than in other wooded areas. Fields surrounded by thick tree cover offer pleasant spots to enjoy that are sheltered from even the windiest Chicago days.
