The neighborhood was developed in the 1950’s and consists of mostly single-family homes in a middle class setting. You won’t find a large number of businesses in this neighborhood but plenty of them are just on the borders including restaurants, grocery stores, and more. Pet stores are available along those borders as well, so you and your best friend can make a visit on foot. You have the best of both worlds: idyllic streets and nearby business to take care of your beloved friend’s every need. When it comes to weather, walking is possible most of the year, except in the middle of the winter when brutal storms from lake-effect conditions can lock the city down. Still, you can sneak in walks for much of the winter, provided you bundle yourself and your dog up.
What is the terrain like in Scottsdale?
While walking in dirt and grass is always preferable when you are a dog, you will find the streets in this neighborhood quite pleasant with wide sidewalks, generous grassy areas, and plenty of trees. Your pup will truly enjoy the opportunity to roam and explore the smells of the outdoors. Like all of Chicago, you can expect your walk to be very flat. If you are only going out for some fresh air and to get some sunshine, then you likely won’t care much about the lack of hills. But if you want to get a real workout, then you may find that you have to get creative to make your walks challenging enough. There are lots of nice roads and parks throughout Scottsdale, so it is quite easy to make your walk long enough to get your heart rate up and maybe burn a few calories in the process.

Scottsdale has two large parks within its bounds including one in the north section of the neighborhood and the other to the south. Rainy Park to the north has been around since the airfield was built in the late 1920’s despite serving as temporary housing for World War II Vets during the war. The park now has gardens, grass, trees, and paths for walking on.
A large playground and grassy field next to Durkin Park Elementary school serve as a great place to let your dog enjoy a romp on the grass as well. While not an official park, it is developed for public use and spans two city blocks. Scottsdale is also a short distance away from Marquette Park and Dan Ryan Woods which also have large green spaces for those who would rather enjoy the shade and greenery rather than city streets. Dan Ryan Woods offers a multi-use trail and Marquette has a lagoon and multiple walking trails.
