Wag! Walkers know South Loop
In the heart of Chicago, South Loop is a large neighborhood with plenty of options for your pup! Historically an industrial area of town, South Loop now has plenty of businesses in the area and newly renovated lofts and apartments. Residents have plenty of options while exploring South Loop, as there are plenty of museums, restaurant options, and thirty-one greenways along with access to Lake Michigan. Be sure to visit Kriser’s Natural Pet Store on the north side of the neighborhood for natural pet products and grooming!
Throughout the year, average Chicago temperatures range from 18° - 84°F. The weather in South Loop depends on which season it currently is, so it can also get significantly warmer or colder than the average. South Loop is also only a few blocks away from the shores of Lake Michigan. During the winter, lake-effect snow can create sudden and heavy snowfalls for Chicago residents, so bring some warm gear on your walk.
What is the terrain like in South Loop?
Like most of Chicago, South Loop is fairly flat and there should be very little change in elevation as you explore this neighborhood. Unfortunately, this is a largely artificial neighborhood, so it may be difficult to find a grassy area for your pet to relieve themselves in if you’re out for just a quick walk. However, there are thirty-one greenways to explore during longer outings so while walks may be fairly easy and require little physical exertion, be careful on hot days, as most walking routes may be largely concrete or asphalt. Doggy boots and water bottles may be necessary to make your walk much more comfortable for both you and your pup.
Several large Chicago roads go through South Loop including Roosevelt Road, West Congress Parkway, South State Street, and South Michigan Avenue. Depending on your route, you and your pup may need to take care to avoid high-speed or congested traffic.
How many greenways are there in South Loop?
There are an outstanding number of greenways in South Loop. You and your dog could visit a new greenway every day for a month! Larger parks include Ping Tom Park on the southwest side and Park No. 540 on the south side of the neighborhood. However, Coliseum Park, located centrally in South Loop, has a very small dog run if you are looking for some off-leash time or to allow your dog some time to socialize with others. Smaller parks include Cotton Tail Park, Roosevelt Park, and some unnamed greenways.
Immediately east of South Loop, you will also find Grant Park: one of Chicago’s largest and most well-known greenways. There you will find Grant Bark Park which is another small dog run and plenty of scenic walking paths along Lake Michigan. The park is also home to several museums, a music venue, the Art Institute of Chicago, sports facilities, a harbor and marina, and a skate park.
