South Old Irving Park is a small triangle-shaped neighborhood in northwest Chicago that sits just below Old Irving Park and Irving Park. The neighborhood is comprised mostly of single-family and apartment homes, but a few eateries and shops sit on the main roads: North Milwaukee Avenue, West Addison Street, and North Pulaski Road. The Milwaukee Animal hospital sits on North Milwaukee Avenue in the southern part of the neighborhood for pet owners and their health needs.

As an extension to Old Irving Park, South Old Irving Park is very small and quieter than other bustling parts of Chicago. The ideal time for walking your dog in Chicago is during the spring and fall seasons when the weather is more temperate. The winter brings freezing temperatures and snow while the summer days can reach the 80s. Check the forecast before heading out to make sure the weather is perfect for a walk with your pup.

Blocks of homes with tree-lined streets make up most of South Old Irving Park. The planted trees offer shade as you walk through the quiet neighborhood. While it's mostly concrete sidewalks and roadways, there are grassy verges on some of the streets that make for a perfect place for a quick rest. There are no hills in the neighborhood, so you can expect an easy walk with your dog. It may present a bit of a problem if you're more interested in a challenging hike or other heavy exercises on your daily outings.

The neighborhood is a little over a mile in circumference, so South Old Irving Park is perfect for a quick walk. This community is good for those who want less crowded streets and noise or for dogs who favor quiet residential streets. There are plenty of these roads to explore with your pooch as you enjoy a quiet break from the city.

The only green space in South Old Irving Park is the Merchant Park Community Garden: a small patch of public garden in the northwest part of the neighborhood, right next to a strip of industrial buildings. Commissioned in 2010, the park was a mission of the residents of South Old Irving Park to revitalize an unused piece of land in their neighborhood. Now, residents use the space to plant flowers, vegetables, and fruits for the community.

Apart from the community garden, the only green spaces in South Old Irving Park are grassy verges between the sidewalk and roads. If you're looking for a large green space to take your dog, Kilbourn Park is about a 10-minute walk west from South Old Irving Park and offers shady grassy areas and benches. Remember to pay attention to any rules and regulation of these areas regarding having your pup on a leash and be courteous to other visitors.
