Wag! Walkers know Union Ridge
Union Ridge is located in the Norwood Park community and is a
small neighborhood of mostly
single-family homes. The area was first settled by
Israel Smith in the 1830s. Today, instead of log cabins, the streets are
lined with single-family homes, sidewalks, and plenty of shade trees to help keep
you and your pup cooled down when the summer
sun is shining. There are several restaurants in the area worth checking out
and a pet supply store nearby. While the only green space in the area is the Union Ridge Cemetery, there is a dog park just to the
north on N. Avondale Ave.
If you think being inland is going to save you from lake
effect snows and winds, you would have to move much further inland. The entire
Chicago area tends to spend weeks with the winds blowing in off the lake that
keeps the mercury trying to find its way
out of the bulb.
What is the terrain like in Union Ridge?
Chicago and the surrounding area all sit in a vast mostly-flat plain with only minor variations.
Walking with your pup could become a little mundane. But, then again, so can anything
else where the routine never changes. In Union Ridge, you are faced with the
basic suburban landscape of laid out grids. The only changes are based on
the shape of the land when the area was developed.
How do you go about making walks at least a little more exciting in
such an unexciting area? You put your creativity and sense of adventure to work
trying to find new ways to walk around the neighborhood! You start looking for a
place to go with your dog where you can
find trails to hike on and vast areas of grass for the two of you to play on. Walks
around the neighborhood are good but be
sure take your dog somewhere green to play at least once a week.
How many greenways are there in Union Ridge?
The only greenways in Union Ridge are the Union Ridge Cemetery
where many of those who fell in the Civil War lie buried. There are paths to
walk on and it is not uncommon to see others
walking their dogs here. However, be sure that if you follow suit, you take bags with you to clean up any messes your pup leaves behind.
However, just to the
north on N. Avondale Ave. is the Norwood Park Dog-Friendly
Area. This is a very popular place for locals to take their dog walking. It's an excellent place to let your pup run around
without a leash. There is a doggie water station, waste bags on site, tons of parking, and plenty of benches for you to relax on while your dog is off having a good time hanging out with friends new and old. The park is
kept clean and safe by a team of local volunteers.
