Wag! Walkers know West Chatham
West Chatham is one small community in the Chatham township. The community was initially designed for the expanding middle class. Today, it continues to be a predominantly middle-class neighborhood and the only real thing that has changed is the ethnic makeup. The majority of the homes in West Chatham are single-family houses with larger suburban-style yards. There are several eateries and other businesses on the outer boundaries of the area, along with the Lenart Elementary Regional Gifted Center. The residential areas have plenty of sidewalks and, of course, on the south side of the community is the West Chatham Park which offers a water play area for the kids, baseball diamonds, a football field, and acres of grass for you and your pooch to run around on. Much like the rest of Chicago, summers tend to be very hot and humid while winters are bitter cold and typically include many inches of snow.
What is the terrain like in West Chatham?
The terrain here is very similar to the rest of the city. In other words, it's flat. There are advantages and disadvantages to living in an area that is so flat. If you are just getting started going out for walks with your pup or he's a bit on the chubby side, or he has physical/health issues, the flat ground may be the perfect starting point. You can always vary the direction you walk, take in different parts of the community, extend the distance you walk, and of course, hang out in the West Chatham Community Park.
When you look at the number of businesses surrounding the community, this area is like a small oasis away from the maddening storm. For those who desire a little more challenging terrain, Lake Calumet and the shores of Lake Michigan are both well-within driving distance to provide some variety during your daily outings with your pup.
How many greenways are there in West Chatham?
West Chatham is a split community in that part of the town is given to a mall, large big-box stores, and a financial center. The rest of the area is given over to homes with large yards and one large park. The park covers a little over 115 acres and has a lot to offer local residents including a clubhouse, spray pool, a basketball court, tennis courts, baseball diamonds, and, of course, plenty of lovely green grass for you and your pup to enjoy romping around on. The park facilities open up for the public early in the morning which is the perfect time for those mid-summer walks when daytime temperatures are at their peak.
Depending on where you live in the community, you may be within walking distance of an empty lot that has been allowed to return back to its natural state and provides an excellent place for you and your pup to take a quick break.
