Wag! Walkers know West Garfield Park
Located to the west of downtown Chicago, West Garfield Park is one of the older communities and one of 77 in the Greater Chicago area. Here, you will find a collection of single and multi-family homes initially intended to house the workforce that drove the development of Chicago and the many industries that have called this area home over the centuries. While there are a few restaurants and stores in the area, you'll need your car to find pet supplies and groomers. The neighborhood is littered with empty lots where homes and other buildings have been demolished. Many of those who live here are working together to improve the area and attract more affluent investors. Being just a few miles in from Lake Michigan, the summers here are spectacular, but when winter comes, the temperatures often dip well below zero when the winds are coming off the lake, frequently driving snow in front of it.
What is the terrain like in West Garfield Park?
Like most of the area, there aren't many hills in West Garfield Park. In fact, beyond the slight dip in the roads here and there, you would be hard pushed to find any type of challenging terrain for your walks. The best thing you can hope for is that the weather is nice enough for you and your furry friend to enjoy some nice long walks. One thing you will find here, like in most older communities, is there are plenty of sidewalks, most of which have small green areas between the road and the sidewalks. Many of the streets also offer large, old growth, shady trees that will give the two of you a respite from the summer sun. The nearest thing to challenging terrain is likely to be Garfield Park itself. The community borders the west side of Garfield Park which is a great place to take your pooch to play.
How many greenways are there in West Garfield Park?
When it comes to green space, there are only a couple of named small parks in West Garfield including Tipton Park at the corner of N. Kostner and Lake St. Both have large, grassy areas where you and your pup can play as long as they are on a leash. As always, be considerate and pick up after him on your visit. Small green spaces can be found throughout the area, but many are merely bare ground where buildings once stood and have long since been torn down. However, the big green attraction has to be Garfield Park on the east side of the community. The park covers 185 acres and is the home of the historic Golden Dome Field House. Not only does this area have athletic fields, a pool, and a fishing lagoon, but there are acres of grass and trees for you and Fido to roam around following the many trails running through the park.
