Wag! Walkers know South Loop
Not that many years ago, South Loop in Cicero was little more than an area of parking lots and warehouses. Much of the area had been left unused for years and there wasn't much in the way of residential property. Today, South Loop has become one of the hottest properties on the market! Towering apartment and condominium buildings are going up at an incredible rate. As an added bonus, living here puts you right across the street from Soldier Field, home of the "Da Bears." There is a dog park in the northern part of the neighborhood, pet supply stores within driving distance, and plenty of trendy restaurants to check out.
Living along the shores of Lake Michigan means having to deal with lake effect snows and winds for long stretches of winter, bringing the temperature down into the sub-freezing zone. Summers are far more attractive with temperatures in the upper 80s and endless blue skies.
What is the terrain like in South Loop?
South Shore is a curious blend of high-density multi-family housing, condominiums, and more. The area is much like most other communities on the lake as there are barely noticeable changes in elevation. The area is pretty flat and, depending on where you live, you might have to walk a long way to find anything but pavement for you to take your walks on.
Thankfully, most streets have wide sidewalks so you won't find yourself walking in the streets where traffic tends to be heavy. The good news is that no matter which direction you take, the two of you will eventually find a park, a large open area of grass, or trails to walk on! Keep in mind that if you're going to spend any amount of time walking on pavement, you need to let your pup have time to get used to the distance. If you don't, it can lead to some sore joints and tired paws.
How many greenways are there in South Loop?
You might be surprised at the sheer amount of green space in an area of the city that was once home to miles of paved parking lots and warehouses. No matter where you live in the neighborhood or which direction you travel in, you will find something in the way of green space.
From the aptly named Cottontail Park where the bunnies roam free in the middle of town to the dog park in the northern half of town, residents have plenty of options. Keep in mind this is not an off-leash dog park, but there is a huge dog-friendly area to the west between S. Clark St. and the river. Again, this is not an off-leash area, but there are acres of open ground with trails to walk on and plenty of room.
To the east is Soldier Field, home of the Bears! Grant Park and Northerly Island stretch all the way down the coast to Burnham Park.
