Wag! Walkers know Seminary District
The Seminary
District is a neighborhood in the southwestern corner of Maywood, Illinois which is a satellite town outside of Chicago. Though its name might suggest a
strong religious presence, the neighborhood is mostly residential and has no
more churches or institutions of religious practice than most average American
towns. The neighborhood is fairly large and has a history of crime and
gang-related activity, so it is best for walking during the daytime.
Though
Maywood is near the city limits of Chicago, it is still 10 miles west of the
center of the city. Because of this, it doesn’t experience nearly as much of
the brutal wind and biting cold coming off of Lake Michigan during the winter
that the areas closer to downtown experience. Its winters can still be very
cold, but the summer and springtime in Maywood are lovely, ideal seasons for
dog walking with your pup at your side.
What is the terrain like in Seminary District?
Like most of the Chicago area, the Seminary District in Maywood is extremely flat. You will not encounter any hills, steep inclines, or dramatic shifts in elevation while on a walk. In fact, the walking terrain in this neighborhood is about as mild as they come with sidewalks on most of the streets that are lined with trees and grassy areas.
Maywood isn’t a heavily traveled town, so the street and foot traffic will be minimal most times of the day. The major thoroughfares that define the boundaries of the Seminary District are Madison Street to the north, Harrison Street to the south, 25th Avenue to the west, and 9th Avenue to the east. These roads will likely have a fair amount of traffic during regular rush hour times, so it will be best for you and your dog to venture into the quieter parts of the neighborhood during high-traffic rush hour.
How many greenways are there in Seminary District?
There are no
parks or greenways within the immediate borders of the Seminary District, but
there are plenty of options within close walking distance. Just a few blocks
north of the district, you will find Memorial Park. The park is small, but it
has a good amount of open green space, several athletic fields, and a number of
trees around its border that provide shade. This is the
only major park within the borders of the whole town of Maywood.
If you
venture west down Washington Boulevard, you will find
Stevenson Park. This park is much larger than Memorial Park and it has an
enormous indoor fitness complex as well as open fields, athletic fields, and a
creek that runs along its eastern edge. There are also some smaller parks on
the eastern side of Maywood that you and your dog can explore, but Stevenson and
Memorial are the two most conveniently located near the Seminary District.
